Upon completion of my LLB, I was fortunate enough to win the Max Engel Bursary Prize from the University of Northampton and Max Engel & Co LLP, rewarding me with £2,000 and the opportunity to work at the firm for two weeks.

On my first day, I got a feel for the firm and spent time speaking with some of the solicitors as well as Helen, the Managing Partner (who I spent my two weeks sitting with). I was pleased to discover that a few solicitors were alumni of Northampton University as it demonstrated the career opportunities available to graduates like myself.

Throughout the first week, I spent time working on different documents for commercial clients such as a Deed of Grant of Easement as well as drafting a new Lease for a business premises; in addition to this I drafted a Deed of Variation. This was both daunting and exciting as it was a chance to learn new skills, I enjoyed working through my draft with Helen and learning more about the intricacy and care that goes into every document prepared, she spent time explaining the issues properly to ensure I understood. All of these activities were invaluable experiences that built on my knowledge from university.

Being exposed to new areas of law such as Wills and Probate has been fascinating. I was astonished at how much work happens behind the scenes of the Wills and Probate team; it was very intriguing and I particularly enjoyed working on such private client matters throughout my two weeks. Being fortunate enough to be invited into a client meeting with Claire to update a Will, as well as being invited out with Rebecca to resolve Lasting Power of Attorney issues at the bank. This really gave me an idea of how they worked and watching them provide a friendly and personal service to the clients inspired me as I enjoy seeing links between the law how it can help people.

Having developed a keen interest in feminism and equality at university it was incredibly exciting to speak to women at the firm practising as solicitors and gain an insight into their careers and how this profession can now pair with a busy family life! It was great to speak with all of the solicitors, those newly qualified and those with many years of experience! When speaking to all of the staff, it was apparent many had spent time studying together either on their LLB or LPC and then, in turn, had resulted in opportunities to work together, this taught me the importance of networking with fellow students, academic tutors and colleagues and making connections that may help twenty or even thirty years down the line. Speaking with Shannon, one of the more recently qualified solicitors was great as she answered all of my questions regarding training and becoming a solicitor, I took a lot away from our discussion such as finding further work experience and to never turn down an opportunity! These conversations with all of the solicitors were a true highlight of the experience, as this gave an insight into their work and how they have got to where they are; hearing that Helen had worked up from a work experience student to Managing Partner was truly inspiring!

I also enjoyed working at a local firm as I could see that the team worked closely together and provided the best service possible to clients, all staff were taken care of and help was available if needed. If I were to embark on the route to become a solicitor, I would prefer to work at a firm like Max Engel and Co as they would provide very well-rounded training with ongoing support. Overall, my work experience was thoroughly enjoyable, thank you very much to Helen and Sara for accommodating me!
