At Max Engel Solicitors, our vision is to be more than just a law firm. We aim to be a community; where safety inclusivity and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do. We believe that by supporting the whole person, we enable our team to flourish, deliver outstanding service to clients, and build a better workplace for all. The 27th July is International Safe-Place-To-Work-Day. At Max Engel Solicitors, we are deeply committed to creating a workplace where every individual feels safe, respected, and supported both professionally and personally. We recognise that true safety and wellbeing are much more than just physical security. It involves creating an environment and an ethos that supports mental health, physical well-being, inclusivity, and accessibility for all. Our message has been the same for over 75 years: “We’re on your side” but this doesn’t just refer to our clients!
Comprehensive Accessibility and Inclusive Facilities
Our new premises, which we moved into back in March of 2025, are fully accessible, ensuring that colleagues and clients with disabilities can move freely and comfortably throughout our premises, with an accessible toilet on our ground floor fully kitted out with an emergency assistance alarm as well as having wheelchair space and support apparatus. We have a removable access ramp as well as an extra large car parking space for clients who may need some assistance or who need additional space to manoeuvre in and out of their vehicles. We also provide gender-neutral toilet facilities, which creates a safe and welcoming space for our staff clients and visitors of all gender identities. These facilities help to remove barriers and promote dignity, reflecting our respect for the diversity of all who walk through our double doors.
Proudly LGBTQ+ Friendly
Max Engel Solicitors is proud to be an LGBTQ+ inclusive workplace. We actively cultivate a culture where diversity and individuality is celebrated, and where staff and clients alike can feel confident being their authentic selves. At Max Engel, we have a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination and harassment, which helps create a safe environment where everyone is treated fairly, equally, and with respect.
Mental Health Support
Being a smaller law firm, we take pride in understanding the importance of mental and emotional wellbeing. As we are smaller we are all individuals, and known on more personal terms both within their own teams and across the firm, which does not often happen at larger law firms. This personal knowledge allows us to be more responsive and reactive where issues arise, and we promote a culture where mental health is discussed without stigma or hesitation. We offer resources, support programs, and training to equip our team with the tools they need to manage stress, anxiety, and other challenges, and we operate an “open door” policy for any member of staff who is experiencing difficulties. We encourage a balanced workload, with realistic and achievable targets as well as flexible working arrangements to support personal wellbeing and responsibilities outside the workplace, recognising that a healthy mind is essential for productivity and happiness.
Promoting Physical Health and Wellness
Physical health is equally important to us. We actively encourage healthy living through initiatives such as comfortable and supportive desk setups to prevent strain and injury, wellness workshops, and access to fitness opportunities where possible. Whether it is promoting regular breaks, facilitating health screenings, or offering guidance on nutrition and exercise, at Max Engel Solicitors, we strive to help our people maintain their physical well-being. Several members of staff are this weekend participating in the race for life with the enthusiastic support and encouragement of their colleagues. We believe that caring for the body is just as fundamental as caring for the mind in creating a thriving, resilient team, which makes us different from larger firms. Members of our team have also taken part in webinars to understand and how to cope with menopause, as this can be a challenging time in your life.
Our next physical health session will be in September, where all staff can take part in a private Mini Health MOT designed to help us check in on our physical health and wellbeing.
The goal is to identify any areas for improvement and support our team in taking small, positive steps toward better health. It will be relaxed, confidential, and completely optional and a great opportunity to prioritise wellbeing at work.
Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Respect
Diversity is a source of strength and innovation at Max Engel. Our policies ensure that every person, regardless of background, identity, or ability, is welcomed and valued. We strive to maintain an environment where respect and kindness are non-negotiable, creating a solid foundation of trust and collaboration amongst our teams and across the whole firm.
A Culture of Safety and Empowerment
Our approach to workplace safety extends beyond compliance; it is about empowerment. We actively listen to our staff, seek feedback, and continuously improve our environment and policies. Training and awareness programs ensure that everyone understands their role in maintaining a safe and supportive workplace. This commitment creates a space where we feel confident to speak up, share ideas, and grow among one another.
My Thoughts and Experience
Although I am currently the youngest member of staff at Max Engel Solicitors, and I had no previous experience in any type of workplace when I joined Max Engel in 2021, I have never felt overlooked or underestimated. Whilst working here, I completed my level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship in 2021, and I am nearing the end of my second apprenticeship, Level 3 Multi-Channel Marketing. From the very beginning, I have been made to feel like a valued part of the team, with my contributions recognised and my potential encouraged. The firm’s genuine investment in my professional growth is what has stood out most. I have been given real opportunities to expand my knowledge, take on new responsibilities, and develop practical skills that are essential for my career progression.
There is a strong culture of mentorship and support here, where senior colleagues are always willing to share their expertise and provide guidance. Rather than being limited by my age or experience, I have been trusted to grow at my own pace and to take on challenges that push me forward. It is incredibly motivating to work in an environment where career development is taken seriously, no matter where you are in your journey.
Being part of a firm that values fresh perspectives, encourages ambition, and considers talent at all levels has made a real difference to my confidence and career. I am proud to be part of a workplace that sees potential in its people and actively helps them fulfil it.
